So here's a question: Have any of you ever run across a review from a judge for a flash fiction piece using these guidelines? Character: Did the people seem real? Also, I accept one character or two characters, first, in Flash Fiction. - 1 Star through 5 Stars One character or two characters = 5 stars Three characters = 4 1/2 stars Four characters = 4 stars Five characters = 3 1/2 stars Six characters = 3 stars Seven characters = 2 1/2 stars Eight characters = 2 stars Nine characters = 1 1/2 stars Ten+ characters = 1 star Point of View: I accept First Person Point of View or Third Person Point of View. - *Thumbsupl* or *ThumbsDownL* Scene: In Flash Fiction, one scene is the best. - 1 Star through 5 Stars One scene = 5 stars Two scenes = 4 stars Three scenes = 3 stars Four scenes = 2 stars Five+ scenes = 1 star Strong Words: Did the author used nouns and verbs only in Flash Fiction? - 1 Star through 5 Stars No adjectives and/or adverbs = 5 1 through 5 adjectives and/or adverbs = 4 1/2 6 through 10 adjectives and/or adverbs = 4 11 through 15 adjectives and/or adverbs = 3 1/2 16 through 20 adjectives and/or adverbs = 3 21 through 25 adjectives and/or adverbs = 2 1/2 26 through 30 adjectives and/or adverbs = 2 31 through 35 adjectives and/or adverbs = 1 1/2 36+ adjectives and/or adverbs = 1 Plot: Was the plot clear and believable? Did the main character have a clearly defined problem to solve? Did the judge feel by the end of the piece that this problem was solved? Did the story start at the right place and end at the right place in the plot? Did the plot move fast enough to keep the judge attention? Was the focus on one main conflict believable? Did the conflict and tension in the plots come to some reasonable ending? - 1 Star through 5 Stars Grammar and Spelling: Was the English readable? Were there too many grammatical errors, misuse of punctuation, run-on sentences, etc.? Point out any typos or misspellings? Were there so many such errors that they made reading the piece difficult for the judge? - 1 Star through 5 Stars Format: Was the story easy to read? Would it help to put blank lines between paragraphs? - 1 Star through 5 Stars I have been writing and reviewing flash fiction wrong all this time apparently. I've won a couple of contests without using these guidelines, but for this particular judge, it's what everyone should be following. What say you, fellow reviewers? -TPB |
