Hmmm. They will keep some part of the body if it isn't an ongoing case, and cremate the rest. If it's a murder investigation and they haven't caught anyone, they have to keep it I do believe. They do send them to forensic anthropologists though for identification help, and then THEY have to store it. Or, to a forensic artist will can try to reconstruct the face in clay, and their backlog for work can be over a year from some shows I've seen Lol how morbid huh! This author I read man would she know. Most morgues have interns I bet you anything you could ask...especially your local morgue.
Oh DNA storage? The preferred method for skeletonized remains was to powderize the tooth root and see if there's some DNA in there. They have to replicate it many times to get enough to run though so not a sure thing. Not sure of the preferred method these days, I do think it matters on the condition of the remains.
