Dandelion Man I agree to a point. When building a world, one has to look at the "WORLD." Every setting has elemental rules. As mentioned above, one can't do the same things in a zero gravity that one does in say our gravity. I look for what rules the author has set for the reader to know. What can the characters do or not do. My pet peeve is Vampires who don't drink blood or can go out in the sun. That isn't a vampire. Make up your own creature, but don't take one that has established perimeters and mess with them just to be different. I will call them out on it every time. I'm reviewing a writer on Wdc who invented 'pires They're like a vampire but are a hybrid. There is so much wrong with this epic tale, after this whole year of reviewing, the author hasn't improved all that much. Every once in a while I'll get a couple of chapters where setting, emotion, etc has improved, then the next review request is back at the the beginning. Research for her world is non existent. I don't even go there, we're still working on basic writing-of-a-story skills.
In fantasy Tolkien gave Middle Earth elemental rules. While his basic characters were under the same rules the reader is, he added magic, talking and walking trees, etc that intrigues the reader. All of they were subject to the elemental rule of EARTH.
