What is the biggest thing you ever did on a dare? What was the outcome? In 1975, while stationed at NTS Memphis, my B-School classmates dared me to enter the base boxing competition. The idea was to show the Jar-heads in our class that they were not everything they thought they were. I did well initially, got in the ring with all the right people, and won my first nine matches with little difficulty. I was not all that good, but the Navy had great master chiefs as our trainers. They taught me what I needed to know about amateur boxing. But then, in my tenth bout, I faced an opponent who knew how to box. He hit me twice, and the fight was over, as was my boxing career. With two busted eyebrows, it became clear I was better suited as a lover than a boxer. I turned my attention to all the lovely young women who like guys who could say, "I used to be a boxer." And for some unknown reason, sailors in the middle of Memphis, TN, were extremely weird to the local gals. But they loved us, and we never seemed to run out of willing dates on the weekends. Of course, I looked and presented myself in a much different fashion. Back then, I carried a six-pack. Now it's a keg! |
