At our house, we celebrate the seasons with feasts of ridiculous excess. I smoke turkeys and hams. Christmas dinner is always a huge Prime Rib (Though this year's roast costing $250 is a sharp poke in the wallet.)
But we always include dishes our mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers made. So, there is always an enormous selection of family-honored side dishes. It's not unusual to hear a grandson ask, "What is this?" How wonderful to hear my daughter's answer, "That's your great-grandmother's creamed spinach. She learned to make it from her grandmother Eva."
Our tables have over 200 years of family recipes. We only cook or prepare some of these recipes this time of year. For example, the wife makes the Christmas Punch each year using her grandmother's recipe and punch bowl, which are both over 120 years old.
Making these dishes helps us keep these past beloved family members close and the holidays even more special.
