I'm looking for some person/company/entity to get my writing in a book format. Not for publishing, but to leave behind. To hand on. As in 5 copies or so, but elegantly done. I searched places like Etsy and the web. Print on demand does not look like the artistic touch that I want to go for. I'm doing all the digitizing, formatting, fonts, design, etc. I'm not asking anyone to plug a vendor here. I guess I'm just not familiar with the keywords or search terms I should be using. What's the right phrase for what I'm looking for? Someone here has run across this scenario I'm sure. Anyways, feel free to recommend search terms here. Or you can email me directly. Having something for my children to hold in their hands is one of the goals of my journey on this platform. |
Have you considered doing it yourself? I have done that for some works that I will not submit for publication, but which I wanted my kids to have. I did 3 copies, and, using normal (well, slightly thicker) paper and printer ink, each 250-page book (with a cardboard, full-colour cover) cost me around $20. A5 sized (about the size of a trade paperback). I attached the pages and the cover all myself. The only other thing I needed was MSPublisher. Just a thought, anyway. |
Thanks for the suggestion. I think it's the binding of the book that scares me. Learning curve. I will consider it. New skills keep the mind nimble, right? |
That's why I do A5 size. If you use the booklet function in MSPublisher, it prints the books from A4 to make a series of 4-page booklets; this part of the process is tedious as you need to print them 4 pages at a time or else it is just one great big folding job. When these are folded over, I use wood glue or PVA glue down what would be the spine, spreading it thin so it doesn't ooze down, and then use the widest alligator clips possible to hold it in place until the glue dries. I also tend to put a strip of paper between the glue and the clip so the clip does not attach to the glued section. This has held up, so far, for 25 years (yes, I did the first book for my niece 25 years ago, in 1999). |
