Man has it been a while! Traveling the world for work took a big toll on me, changed the family dynamics, and quite frankly burnt me out. Really, it just crushed my creativity and any motivations to do anything other than work. 1 star - wouldn't recommend. I gave it up in 2021. It took me 3 and a bit years of rolling ideas in my head, a marriage, and another daughter to really get the creativity back, but I can confidently announce in 2025, it's back and so am I. I'm so Glad to see this community is still here and comforted in seeing some familiar suitcases. I look forward to meeting the not so familiar ones. I wish you all well, and hope this new year treats you with kindness and courtesy. Cheers everyone, it's great to be back. |

I admit I'm curious how business travel changed family dynamics. There is a chance I'll be taking my first business trip (abroad!) this year, and I have very little clue what I'm in for. Color Bar Sig |
Well, I once had a fiance who became an ex fiance. Then a few years after, met my lovely wife in Australia, and now we have a daughter. It changed a lot. |
Welcome back, J. M. Kraynak ![]() And I thought my hiatus was a long one--five years that ended when I joined WDC. That was the result of a very bad and demoralizing review on another site. I look forward to reading about all the changes in your life while you were gone. Best of luck with all your writing endeavors. |

I never stopped creating, I just never wrote any of it down. |
![]() ![]() I write best in silence when I'm depressed or when sights and sounds and smells impel me to put pen to paper and scribble my vomit down (to be cleaned up later). Travel... takes a lot out of me. I just got back from Malaysia/Thailand. Moving from bed to bed every 2-6 days takes mental and physical effort. I learned a lot but I was worn out in less than 2 months. I took hundreds of photos (more effort) that I'll later use to evoke memories (but lost a couple hundred when I lost my camera). I didn't write down as much in my blog as I should have. I hope that your renewed creative juices lead to new writings. |
Traveling isn't all bad, but I've got 3 kids now, and a wife. I just couldn't do it anymore. 12 years of living out of a suitcase, jet lag, currency exchange, getting detained in China, trying to convince Australians that their food isn't nearly as good as they think it is, it just got to be exhausting. That, and crossing the date line from Sydney to San Francisco or LAX, is just weird because you land before you even left. That's really weird. It takes a lot to wrap my head around flying into the past. I had to make a change. It didn't help that when I was traveling, I worked 12 hour days, 7 days a week. That's enough to burn out anyone. Still, it was a privilege to see as much of the world as I've seen before 40, and it gave me a terrific perspective. I've met some remarkable people, even met my wife abroad. I wish I would have taken more photos of Asia and the Middle East. I've got tons of photos of Australia, but there were some amazing sights in the Middle East and Asia. I'd very much like to write in the amazing ancient architecture of either of those regions in a story someday. |
