If I could, I would rename parathyroid glands Parathyroid glands are tiny glands behind the thyroid. They have NOTHING to do with the thyroid except that they share nerves and blood supply. They can be damaged when you have your thyroid removed. My surgeon only chose to salvage one of the four parathyroid glands. He saud, "It was so big, I did not think it would be a problem. Well, that big parathyroid gland did not function and I was left with hypoparathyroidism. All folks ever hear is "thyroid" and never understand that the disorder I have has NOTHING to do with my thyroid but rather with these little glands that regulate the calcium level in my blood. So, since the one parathyroid gland the surgeon salvaged is not working, I have to regulate the calcium level in my blood myself which has not been easy... Also, hypOparathyroidism is rare. Hyperparathroidsim is not. So even that has been an issue for me to explain... Even during my recent hospitalizarion, the hospitalist was not familiar with hypoparathyroidism and allowed my calcium level to drop to a critical level. I have been advised to get a medical alert bracelet that says hypocalcemia because too often hypoparathyroidism is misunderstood by emergency medical personel. It is bad enough dealing with this disorder—having people mistake it for hypothryoidism can drive me bonkers at times... ~ ~ ~ JESUS is LORD! ~ ~ ~ |
