I've got no issues killing characters in order to support the narrative, but I killed my most favorite character I've ever explored, the narrator of all my short stories who ties into my novel. It broke my heart. I think I need to have a funeral for him.
Have you guys ever mourned the loss of one of your characters?
When I had to write the death of my recurring fantasy character, it was tough, but I also knew I could go back and add adventures to his life from before the death, so I knew I had that.
But I once killed off the lead character in a novel, the man around whom the action centred, and that scene left me shaken.
Yeah - Killed a character called John Wrangler. Idea is that he is a human in a world where vampires and werewolves rule, and humans are lucky if they are classified as Pets or Slaves, or otherwise under a Protected status if they were Free. John though, born a Feral, gets caught and placed on a farm for human livestock. His goal - find a way to free his herd. Thing is, John and his owner have a certain amount of mutual respect for one another, and thus he doesn't want the werewolf to come to any real harm. However, there is a vampire, whom he hates with all his guts, and wants destroyed. The trick is to free the herd without ruining the werewolf too much, while framing the vampire for the apparent theft.
Of course, to be honest, I do give a reason for John to die - he has a form of cancer that's untreatable, and he only has six months to live, hence why he implements the escape when he does.
That being said, I do have stories that are set Before, and After, his death.
I suppose that's kind of the advantage of the character I'm referring to. He doesn't have much more than a supporting role in the novel so I can still write plenty of short stories for him outside of that narrative. Still, it kind of hurt me a little bit but no one is immortal I suppose
Killing of a main character is not allowed. If you kill the character, you have to create a re-entrance of that character. It is not an easy task.
Killing of recurring characters may be done.
I have to agree with S 🤦 . I'll kill whatever character is necessary to move the narrative the way I need it to. If it's a main character, so be it.
Yes, I've killed a beloved character, and have no regrets. She died at the right time.
She has a tremendous backstory I can always explore if I ever decide to revisit her and in any case, I am an omnipotent writer: I have the powers of resurrection and necromancy at my fingertips.
I have to agree with the others who disagree with you. Sometimes the death of the Main Character is needed to give rise to the one who has become something of the new main.
For instance, let's go with, The Walking Dead tv series. For many years, we followed Rick Grimes as he woke up in the world, reunited with his family, and lead the survivors. However, along the way, there is Daryl Dixon - just your generic redneck white trailer trash that rides a bike and use a crossbow. Initially, he's something of an asshole, and no one really likes him. However, he ends up growing up, caring for the rest, and after Rick's apparent death, ends up becoming something akin to the leader or otherwise very important to the group.
