I had two goals for the week.

The first was to make one final pass over my Jomsvikings story before the Musicology Anthology deadline. Mission accomplished.

The second was to write, well, something. I wasn't sure if I wanted to pick up an existing project or start something new. I ended up starting, and finishing, something new. It was a rare foray into The Writers Cramp.

SOAPBOX ALERT:

I'm not a fan of the Writers Cramp for the simple reason that 1000 words isn't enough. You can't develop any tension in a story in 1000 words, let alone release it. You can't go into any depth in your characters, you can't resolve unanswered questions. Your story is restricted to:

Something happened to someone.
That person did something.
Problem solved, the end.

Even reading them, the best ones make me wish the writer had taken the time and effort to develop his idea further.

END SOAPBOX

I saw the prompt the other day and had an idea, so I went with it. I'm glad I did. Now, I didn't put any real effort into it. I tossed off the idea in an hour, came back a couple hours later and did a quick edit, and called it a day. But it was fun. I didn't have any stress over trying to make it good, I just told the story and got on with my day without any of the stress that normally comes with writing. Doing something just for the sheer fun of it was a great reminder of why I write in the first place.
