I was a kid in primary school when the UK had their experiment with staying on British Summer Time (UTC + 1) all year round. It might have suited those in England, but up here in Scotland we were going to school in the gloom. We were supplied with reflective armbands and stickers for our bags to make sure we could be seen by drivers. (This was in the early 70s, when 5 year old kids would actually walk to school! On their own!!)
I'm retired now, so it really doesn't affect me much one way or another, but I loathed these dark mornings. I seem to be a minority, though, as every time this subject gets brought up over here, the prevailing view is to dump Greenwich Mean Time (UTC) and stay on BST all year round. If Scotland ever breaks away from the rest of the UK, I could see the rump UK doing just that.
Maybe we should split the difference, have a single switch to UTC + 30min one Spring, then leave it fixed from then on. We could call it HNT - "Happy Now?" Time.
