I don't really have a worst song I've ever heard, there are songs I find annoying. The Theme song for Barney, a children's show here in the States, that hopefully never made it out of the States, comes to mind: https://youtu.be/LK3C9IytrLI?si=uq0e0rjjO3spQVW3 It isn't even an original tune; it's a resetting of the children's nursery rhyme, "This Old Man". The original at least served a purpose; it was a counting song. https://youtu.be/Di23O5cN4ZU?si=K1ooOV9-hixdrCu1 At the height of Barney's popularity, grade-school-age kids sang it endlessly, its repetitive, single-stanza lyrics looping endlessly. If I hated anything about a song, it's more a common practice, rather than a particular song. Many TV shows and movies feature theme songs that were written as instrumentals, meaning the original composer did not include lyrics. Now, there's gold in them thar themes in the form of royalties. Each time the show airs, the composer gets a bit of loot. And, here's the practice I really hate, the show's Executive Producer often adds lyrics that the original composer never intended. Because that producer is now listed as the lyricist, they are entitled to half of the royalties. This effectively dilutes the composer's earnings. Usually the lyrics are at best — horrible! A case in point, Gene Roddenberry's lyrics for the "Star Trek TOS Theme": "I’m sure some of you know about this already, but for the rest of you, here are Roddenberry’s lyrics to the original Star Trek theme: Beyond The rim of the star-light My love Is wand’ring in star-flight I know He’ll find in star-clustered reaches Love, Strange love a star woman teaches. I know His journey ends never His star trek Will go on forever. But tell him While he wanders his starry sea Remember, remember me. Wow. Those are certainly…words. They have syllables and everything." Sorry, that got a touch long-winded. |
