One day deep in the jungle, two boys had gone out hunting for food. The first one was Mowgli, a former wild boy who now lived in the Man Village. He now had responsibilities, such as hunting food for the village, and bringing water, fruit, and materials for the village to use. Although the Village Chief and Messua had taken Mowgli in and tried to make him feel like part of their family, Mowgli wasn't so sure if he cared for these responsibilities. He secretly wished he could go back to the jungle with his animal friends and do what he wanted. However, he couldn't leave, since he cared about his new friends, namely Shanti, the village girl he met when he first came to the Man-Village, and Ranjan, the young son of the Village Chief and Messua and his younger stepbrother. Despite his young age, Ranjan had a lot of courage, and idolized Mowgli, having heard a lot of his adventures in the jungle.
On this particular day, Mowgli was busy hunting, when Ranjan decided to tag along. Mowgli had gotten annoyed with him.
"Ranjan, go home, you're too young to hunt." Mowgli told Ranjan. This made Ranjan feel upset.
"No, I'm not! I'm more brave than you!" Ranjan told Mowgli. Ranjan didn't like being treated like a little child, even though he was only five years old. Mowgli didn't want his little brother to be upset with him, so he sighed and reluctantly agreed to let Ranjan tag along.
"Fine. Just say close. I don't want to get in trouble if a tiger eats you." Mowgli told Ranjan, which made Ranjan feel happier. Although most of the animals in the jungle were Mowgli's friends, two of them weren't; Kaa, the hynotic python who would have loved to snag him in his coils, and Shere Khan, the man-hating tiger who would stop at nothing to make him his next meal. Mowgli promised his family and Shanti that he would keep an eye out for either of them and alert them if he saw either of them. As the two boys wandered through the woods, their stomachs rumbled. They hadn't had anything to eat since they left the Man-village and were feeling hungry.
"Ohhhh... I'm hungry, Mowgli. Do you have any fruit?" Ranjan asked Mowgli. Mowgli checked the bag he had nearby, and although it had a few things in it, including a fishing pole and a snake charmer's flute, it didn't have any fruit in it at this time.
"Unfortunately, no. There's nothing out here." Mowgli told Ranjan, much to the latter's ire.
"This isn't good. I haven't found one animal to hunt or even fruit to eat. We need food if we're gonna move on!" Mowgli told Ranjan.
Just then, Ranjan noticed something.
"Hey, what's that?" Ranjan asked Mowgli as he pointed to something in the distance. Mowgli wondered what Ranjan saw.
