Shit! His mom was calling him! Alex scrambled to get his stuff together for school, stuffing books and half-finished homework into his backpack as he hopped on one foot to put his jeans on. He grabbed the dictaphone, nearly stuffing it in his backpack.
Alex stopped and turned to stare at the bottle he had just knocked over, and which had been un-knocked by the device. Magic! This thing was magic! He didn’t have to go to school if he didn’t want! Shivering with excitement, he pressed the button on the mysterious object. Would it work again?
“I...I have been given a day off school to work on my, uh, projects.” Alex collected his thoughts as he warmed to the subject. “Um, last week I proposed a special project to create a game that would help teach science and math to grade school students. Because the presentation was so amazing, and, um, because I am a straight A student,” Alex smiled, “the teachers and principal all agreed to give me a week off to pursue my idea.”
Alex let go of the button on the device. The same faint tinkling sound told him something was happening. Suddenly the mess of cards on the ground became neatly-ordered stacks on a new desk next to the window. His old laptop became a state-of-the-art workstation with four monitors, two devoted to a Adobe Illustrator with card designs, one with a spreadsheet outlining the card categories and point values, and one with a notepad full of ideas. Slowly, ideas began to flood his mind about a pretty cool card game where players pursued historical scientific breakthroughs and developed technologies to best their competitors.
“Alex!” his mom called from downstairs. “Be good today! I’ll be home at seven with pizza! Good luck on your game!”
Alex heard the front door shut as he sat there stunned. He stared at the device in his hand as the sound of his mom’s car grew fainter.
