Malon held you in front of her face and grinned as she explained her idea for a game. “Well, I’ve always liked knights and heroes. Maybe I’ll even get to meet one someday... but for now, I can pretend to be a hero. And you’ll get to be my little fairy friend!”
“So... playing make-believe, huh?” you said. “I guess that could be fun...”
“Great!” said the farm girl. She held you to her chest and walked out of the building, heading towards a tree. “Then you’re my fairy from now on, and I’m the hero. Hold on, I’ll go get my sword!”
“Y-you have a sword?” you asked, surprised that a child would have something like that.
Malon giggled. “No, silly, it’s pretend, remember?”
As she said this, she reached the tree and shook it with her free hand. A loose branch the size of a small sword fell down. She crouched and grabbed it, resting it on her shoulder as she smiled at you.
“Good thing it’s noon now,” she said. “I shook that tree at night once, and a giant gold spider fell out of it...”
You shuddered, despite the warmth of Malon’s hand. “We’re not going to fight any giant spiders, are we?”
“Maybe,” said the farm girl. You noticed she was smirking a bit, so you hoped she was only joking.
“Let’s go get my trusty steed now,” she continued, heading towards the corral, “then we’ll head out on an adventure!”
Malon opened the gate to the corral and went inside, carefully approaching a brown foal in the center. The redhead began to hum a pretty little song as she approached the young horse. To your surprise, the foal looked in her direction and trotted over, neighing happily.
“Is this your steed?” you asked.
“Yep!” Malon replied. “Let me introduce you to my friend, fairy boy! Her name is Epona. Isn't she cute?”
The foal calmly stood in front of Malon, looking her in the eye. However, you noticed the gaze of the horse drift down to you, and she leaned closer, sniffing at you. Malon giggled and held you out, closer to Epona. You winced as you found yourself within arm’s reach of the enormous muzzle of the horse, and felt her hot breath on you. You suddenly felt unsafe...
