    by: AlexanderTheMediocre Author IconMail Icon
'Ghost, over here boy' he said getting the attention of the white dire wolf. He held the wood close to the wolf's snout 'Find this wood' he commanded. The wolf seemed to understand. He got up in attention concentration on the smell before he started moving. The wolf quickly got the sent and before Jon could stand up Ghost had already gotten its trail. Jon hurried behind him.

A while later after a couple of turns and almost two occasions where Jon almost tripped due to the haste Ghost made, the wolf stopped. Above him the red dome made up by the branches and leaves of the weirwood. A might ancient tree standing in the middle of a clearing. The snow here was thinner, most of it being blocked by the thick canopy of the tree. The tree was a wild weirwood unlike the one in the Godswood Jon was used to at Winterfell, undisturbed for centuries. It however still had the same serene feeling around it. Jon was never overly religious but even he had to admit the clearing felt magical.

Jon took place in front of the weirwood. Lighting some small candles he had brought with him.
He took in the silence. He got on his knees in front of the tree having his sword besides him.

Jon was ready for his pledge, the moment after which he could not turn back anymore. The same pledge his uncle had taken and the one he had heard all the recruits say just hours ago. After this he could not march south to aid his father and brother. But he had made up his mind.

Jon focused on the face in the tree and started saying the words he had learned by heart. The eyes of the tree seemed to look back at him giving Jon an eerie feeling. It was so much more defined than the one at Winterfell, yet he continued.

'Night gathers and now my watch begins.
It shall not end until my death.
I shall take no wife, hold no lands and father no children.
I shall wear no crowns and win no glory.
I shall live and die at my post.'

Just at that moment a sound came from outside the clearing which made Jon look over. He looked closely until something came at him. A crow flew through the clearing. 'Only a crow' Jon thought to himself with some relieve.

'I am the sword in the darkness.
I am the watcher on the walls.
I am the shield that guards the realm of men.'

While Jon was saying the words he however thought of other things. He thought about the red keep, where is father and sisters were held. He thought of his brother who was marching south with his host. Lastly he thought of the past and his mother, who she was, wherever she might be, and if he would ever know?

'I pledge my life and honour to the nights watch'

Just before he could finish a branch snapped above him. The branch knocked him back on his back and snow which had been gathering above the canopy fell on him quickly, covering his whole body, the weight increasing rapidly while the crow was shrieking being just as startled by the sudden events.

Jon face now was also fully covered in snow. And once more he thought about...
