The ship trembled as it was lifted again, this time more gently. Through the fractured glass, a huge face filled their view—a young girl, maybe eight or nine years old by her appearance, with bright green eyes and a mess of curly blonde hair pulled into uneven pigtails.
She wore a pink hoodie decorated with glittering stars and had dirt smudged across her nose and cheek. In her hand was a plush unicorn the size of a city bus.
“Ohhhh my gosh,” she squealed. “It’s a tiny spaceship! I found a tiny spaceship!”
Her voice was high and shrill, sending vibrations through the ship’s frame. But unlike the boy, she cradled the vessel in both hands with surprising care, as if she instinctively knew it could break.
Tim blinked at the sight. “Okay… this might actually be worse.”
“She’s playing pretend,” muttered Diana, gripping the console. “That’s never a good sign.”
“Hi, little aliens!” the girl said sweetly, waving one massive hand at the window. “Do you want to meet Princess Sparklehoof?”
She shoved the unicorn plush into view so suddenly that Emily yelped. The soft, fabric-covered muzzle bumped the side of the ship with a force that nearly tilted them sideways.
Then she giggled, clearly delighted. “I’m gonna keep you forever!”
“She thinks we’re pets,” Captain Jones said grimly.
The girl plopped down in the middle of what looked like a sandbox the size of a soccer field. Around her were other toys: a broken RC car, a plastic shovel, and a dollhouse. She began humming a tune and set the ship on a fake runway made from cardboard.
