He wore a deep navy-blue uniform, complete with a shiny silver badge larger than a dinner plate. His eyes narrowed as he peered into the wrecked vessel. The black brim of his cap cast a shadow over his massive features, and a booming voice vibrated through the air like thunder.
“Unauthorized aircraft… You’re under arrest.”
The crew staggered as the ship shifted again. Massive gloved fingers gripped the fuselage like a toy, and with surprising care, the officer set it onto the back of a flatbed transport vehicle — at least, it looked like one to them, though it resembled a mobile stadium from their perspective.
Inside the Spindrift II, emergency lights flickered. Daniel clutched the edge of his seat.
“We can’t let them take us,” he hissed. “We don’t even know where we are.”
Jennifer stared up through the window. “I don’t think we have a choice.”
Within minutes, the ship was rolling through a city unlike anything they’d imagined. Towering structures loomed like monoliths. The world was built to scale — just not theirs.
As the transport vehicle came to a halt, the police officer reached down and plucked the cockpit hatch open with two fingers. The sudden rush of outside air made everyone wince. Then came the voice again.
“Step out. Slowly. Hands where I can see them.”
Tim looked at Captain Jones. “Do we cooperate? Or do we try to hide?”
