Tsunade is one of the 3 legendary Sannin of Konoha, famous for her incredible strength and for being the best medical ninja in history. Initially, she is an ambitious girl full of dreams, but her life is marked by two great losses: her brother Nawaki and the love of her life Dan.
These traumas devastated her so much that she fled from that life that took everything from her and seemed to want to give her nothing. Death becomes the center of her life, leading her to be afraid of blood, to gamble and to drink. All these elements have a strong symbolic value.
Gambling symbolizes the absurdity of life. Every day, every choice, every moment is a roll of the dice, where the result is always uncertain. All accompanied by alcohol, the anesthetic par excellence. A doctor who tries to anesthetize what is.
Tsunade reminds us of many of us who, faced with the absurdity of life, feel paralyzed by the fear of making mistakes. How many times do we paralyze ourselves when we are almost finished with a university course, when we are transferring, or when we are planning a project? And what if we fail?
Tsunade means "mooring rope", recalling the idea of strength, resistance and the ability to cling to life even in difficult moments. She is not the most aggressive warrior, yet she is one of the strongest ninja ever. Why? Because she resists. She resists pain, fear, trauma.
It is no coincidence that she is in strong harmony with Katsuyu, the queen of snails. While Jiraiya's toad represents travel and exploration, Orochimaru's snake represents rebirth, Katsuyu the snail is a symbol of resistance.
The snail does not attack, it adapts and survives, just like Tsunade, who has suffered great losses but has found the strength to get back up. It is an animal that heals and above all knows how to endure and wait for the moment to come out of its shell.
In a world where everyone seems to know what to do and where to go, Tsunade reminds us that you have to get lost to find your way again. While everyone goes 1000 miles an hour, we can go at 10, but it is our 10 and perhaps that is our maximum. And there is nothing wrong with that.
