A playful exploration that asks: what would it be like if the protagonist just… refused? |
Genre: Comedy, Supernatural, Slice of Life, Meta-Anime Tone: Satirical but heartfelt Plot Summary: Akane Hoshino looks like every anime protagonist stereotype rolled into one: bright, impossible-to-ignore purple hair (which she tries to dye or hide daily), heterochromatic eyes (she wears colored contacts to match them), and a dramatic backstory about how/why she is destined to be a protagonist that she's desperately trying to bury. Born with inexplicable cosmic potential, she’s the fated savior of her town, the country, her world, the universe, then multiverse (!?)... but all she wants is to live a happy, peaceful, normal life - finish high school, get into a decent college, and work a normal job with normal reaponsibilities, and normal hobbies - where no one ever asks her to wield a sword, defeat a monster, recover an ancient artifact, fend off a would-be suiter, or save the world. Unfortunately, the universe refuses to take "no" for an answer. Each "episode" begins with a new clichéd anime plot hook trying to suck her in: - A new transfer student crashes through the ceiling mid-class, claiming to be her childhood fiancé from another dimension. - Her little brother is kidnapped by a shadowy organization that wants to "awaken her dormant powers." - A school-wide magical battle tournament begins, and she’s automatically entered as the “underdog prodigy.” - Her parents are brainwashed and turned into dark generals of an evil empire. Again. Akane must use her absurd, overpowered abilities not to fight monsters or win tournaments, but to sabotage the universe's attempt to kick off a new narrative arc, again and again. She blows up love confession attempts with absurd detours, rigs magic duels so she’s disqualified early, and disguises herself as background characters to avoid attention. If there's a dramatic speech cue, she interjects and talks over it. If a giant monster attacks her school, she calls in a fake gas leak and evacuates the building before the plot can trigger. --- The Supporting Cast: Kenta (The “Narrative Supporter”) Akane's overly enthusiastic childhood friend who wants her to embrace her destiny. Kenta loves to read Shonen Manga and watch Anime, and he’s convinced the universe chose her for a reason. Much to Akane's frustration, he tries to support her in every new narrative plot hook opportunity by: sneakily making gym class into training regiments, offering unapologetic encouragement, or throwing suspiciously convenient magical items to Akane when the plot requires it. He's basically the shonen anime best friend who knows he’s in a story, and can't wait to see how it unfolds. Yuki (The “Reality Anchor”) The straight-laced, cynical best friend who helps Akane maintain her normal life. She has some interesting talents of her own and uses them to do things like: hacks school systems to delete Akane’s magical grades, rewrites tournament brackets, and installs alarms that detect dramatic lighting shifts or "anime music cues." Yuki is fully aware of how dangerous and exhausting the “protagonist gravity field” is and works to protect Akane from becoming the narrative’s puppet. --- Running Themes & Conflicts: Fate vs. Free Will Akane’s battle isn’t just against monsters or villains—it's against the concept of being "chosen." She resents the way the universe tries to reduce her life to a series of arcs and storylines, and constantly pushes back to assert her agency. Dual Life Stress Maintaining a “normal student life” while deflecting world-ending plotlines takes its toll. Akane starts to wonder if it’s even possible to have a normal life when everything around her is constantly bending toward chaos. Keeping Secrets The rest of the school is mostly oblivious, and Akane goes to ridiculous lengths to keep it that way—bribing teachers, erasing memories, or replacing destroyed buildings before morning homeroom. Family Danger Akane’s parents are loving, kind, and constantly targeted by the narrative - brain washing dark organizations, magical items, mind-controlling bugs, ancient curses, and kidnappers - everything is a potential threat. She must secretly subvert these threats, and even sometimes rescue them, over and over again, all while pretending everything's normal at the dinner table. --- Vision/Style: This Manga/Anime inspired writing prompt aims to play heavily with implied visual questions and contrast. When Akane is living her “normal" life, it’s intended to feel as though it has a slice-of-life, school-days pacing, albeit with a sense of anxiety surrounding the anticipation of the next "narrative hook" swooping in to ruin her peace - all while her two friends plot to "help", in their own way. When the “plot tries to happen,” the visual indicators and descriptions should shift dramatically—intense lighting, over-the-top action, flashy transformations, sparkles, fire, orchestral music—all of which Akane immediately shuts down with a sigh and a fire extinguisher. |
