Chapter #4

Invitation To A Tournament

by: Sly F Author IconMail Icon
While my main aim in publishing my accounts of my adventures with Sherlock Holmes has always been to demonstrate the impressive range of my friend's mental faculties, I've always taken care not to portray him as a physical weakling. Here was a man who could bend a steel poker with ease. The fearsome McMurdo outside of Pondicherry Lodge had testified to Holmes being a formidable opponent in the boxing ring.

Still, it was his intellectual prowess that drew the vast majority of his visitors to Baker Street, so he and I were both equally taken aback when Kung Lao revealed that he had come specifically because of Holmes' talents as an amateur boxer, and that he had come specifically to invite his participation in a martial arts tournament.

"A constable informs us that you were involved in an altercation with another individual," said Holmes.

"An unfortunately necessary skirmish with the vampiress Nitara," said Kung Lao. "She has allied herself with the demon Quan Chi, and is trying to interfere with the tournament before it has even begun."

I felt quite enraged at this ludicrous talk of vampires and demons, and it all seemed to me a poor excuse to lay hands on a member of the fairer sex, but Holmes was listening to our visitor with keen interest.

The tournament Kung Lao described was known as "Mortal Kombat," and he wanted Holmes to fight alongside him as a "champion for Earthrealm," a role that he implied was not to be taken lightly.

"Watson must attend as well," insisted Holmes. "It will provide a good opportunity for him to study my techniques, if his readers would be interested."

Little did we know that this invitation to test Holmes' physical might would also lead to one of the greatest tests of his intelligence he would ever encounter.
