Chapter #3

Vanessa Reads the Card

“I swear, if I have to hear one more VP say the word synergy tonight, I’m throwing my wine at someone,” Vanessa said, leaning one elbow on the bar and swirling her glass like it was part of a performance.

Lilly smirked. “Go for someone in finance. We’d all thank you.”

The two of them weren’t exactly friends, but moments like this—outside the office—blurred the usual lines. With heels off and job titles slightly dimmed by alcohol, even Vanessa could seem almost human.

Lilly had the card in her hand again, turning it over between her fingers.

Vanessa noticed. “What’s that?”

Lilly hesitated. “Just something a weird guy gave me earlier. Said it was a choice.”

“Ooooh, cryptic.” Vanessa snatched it without asking. She read it out loud with raised brows:
“What if my breasts were one cup size larger?”

She gave Lilly a look. “What is this? A spell? A marketing stunt?”

Lilly shrugged. “He just gave it to me. Didn’t say much. Acted like it was serious.”

Vanessa laughed. “Honey, this is the last thing I need.” She gestured dramatically at her own already-generous chest, barely contained by a black silk top.

But then—maybe out of boredom, maybe because she liked making fun of things—she raised her voice slightly and repeated it with mock drama:
“What if my breasts were one cup size larger!”

Nothing happened, of course. No flash of light. No swelling orchestral music. Just the dull clink of glasses and the hum of the crowd.

Vanessa chuckled and handed the card back. “Let me guess—you’re gonna go home, whisper it in the mirror, and wake up looking like Barbie?”

“I wasn’t planning on it,” Lilly said.

Vanessa rolled her eyes, tossed back the last of her wine, and turned away. “Well, if I show up tomorrow unable to button my blouse, I’m blaming you.”

Lilly smiled politely, but her fingers tightened slightly around the card.

She didn’t believe it. Not really.

But something in the back of her mind stirred as she slipped it into her purse again.
