As I read this story, I was wondering if there was a bit of non-fiction in this tale although you called it fiction in the short description. If not, then it's a compliment to your skills of imagining and conveying the narrator's thoughts and emotions so well. This was a great story of brotherly love despite their slightly difficult start when they were children. There was a lot of sadness that the narrator never knew this side of his brother and didn't get to know the person he really was, someone whom he probably would have liked better.

Sadly, it is probably quite often the case that family members don't know as much about each other as friends do, especially if, as in this case, one of them goes away for whatever reason. It seemed interesting that the brother had to go to war to find love.

I liked the way the narrator was able to accept his brother's life and only wished that he had found out about it sooner. There was possibly a little guilt there that his brother hadn't felt he could confide in him, and after he thought he now knew the reason for the suicide he wished that he had been able to be there for him. But even after his death, it seemed that the secret brought them closer together so the narrator was glad that he eventually learned about it so that he could see his brother in a different light and remember him like that.

The writing was excellent and you did a good job combining some of the family's background with the current story which helped to understand the narrator's initial reluctance. As most of the story was told through the narrator's thoughts, it also worked well to include some dialogue to break up the narrative. The interruption caused by Billy's phone call explained some of his feelings, and their brief exchange seemed very natural.

I liked the story. *Smile*
