Hello there, SherritheWriter!
This is good for a short FF piece, and considering you say you're trying to hone your craft of writing short stories, I don't think you have too much 'honing' to do!
I used to enter this contest a lot when I first joined WdC, so I know how difficult it is to try to get plot started, let alone characters and using those prompt words, but you did a nice job here. The idea of these mysterious claw prints was intriguing, and having the smoke rise from them was a great touch.
Great spelling and telling, but I do have one comment:
'I sold my soul to protect our fortune and now the bill has come due story again.' (I'm not sure how 'story' works in this)
Otherwise, well done. I can see why this won The "Daily Flash Fiction Challenge" Open in new Window..
