What I liked ... How wonderfully you captured the character of Mr Collins.
I am having a peek inside your portfolio this morning as I am trying to review everyone taking part in "Game of Thrones" this April. I am so happy I spotted this little gem. I love 'Pride & Prejudice,' love Jane Austen, actually. So this was a pleasure to read. And, what a fantastic job you have done with this story. Mr Collins is every bit as weaselly as he is in Austen's book. Oh, my word. You put a huge smile on my face this morning. Mr Collins. Even if I had no prior knowledge of him, I would know him very well after reading this.
It is interesting to read, from Mr Collins's point of view, about Lady Catherine de Bourgh. She is thoroughly nasty (and a little bit scary), bur Mr Collins notices none of this. She has wealth, and she is highly regarded in society, and that is all he cares about. To him, she has everything. Her quick dismissal of him at the end, as she wanted to play croquet, made me chuckle. He was a little upset about this, but soon focussed on the task in hand — working out how to choose which Bennet daughter he would choose for a wife. I love, love, love the way Mr Collins writes, "Naturally, I abased myself, falling to my knees to thank her for even considering my humble person." That could not be more perfect. It captures everything we need to know about this character. It made think of Uriah Heap and his 'umble background.
Little touches make this story extra special. For example, "Verily, she might be an angel when she sings in the chapel." Your use of the word verily really made me feel like I was reading Jane Austen. And then, this sentence shows exactly the relationship between Lady Catherine and Mr Collins: "I would have liked to have sat with her, but she, in her infinite wisdom, perceived a need to keep the kinks out of my knees." Oh, wow. That made me loud so loudly.
Suggestions: This is a tiny point: " ...which would surely appease poor Mr Bennet, whom my inquires assure me is a good and Christian man." I believe this would be who.
Parting comments: If you had given me this, and said it was written by Jane Austen, I would have believed you. It could easily have been a part of 'Pride & Prejudice.' I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. I could have read pages and pages of your writing about Mr Collins. Great work!
