It's truly classic poetry, the lament of a father. We, most people, often ignore our duties and the little blisses for the sake of our better but uncertain future.
This father is one of them who didn't perform his duties to his needy son when the time demanded that. Now, he realizes that. But, time is cruel. He takes all the physical and mental strengths. He has nothing to do now except repainting. So, his advice to this generation is not to commit to the same blunder. Otherwise, they will have to repaint like him.
