If it was a snake, it would have bitten you. My mother likes using this saying whenever I'm looking for something, only to find it in a place I had already checked out, as it was hiding behind something, and I hadn't moved enough things around. Snakes themselves are also good at hiding too, especially if they have the right coloration or shape. One moment, you think that you're looking at a rope or stick, only to go Nope - that's a snake!
