Hi Archie. Congratulations for making it to 22 years here on Writing.Com. That's a remarkable achievement. So, I'm a bit late with my congrats. This is because of a special edition of "Anniversary Reviews" celebrating WDC's 25th Anniversary. Reviewers are allowed to review any member who joined WDC within the first five years of the site's existence. Thank you for supporting WDC in those early growing years.
I invite your attention to the comments below. Please bear in mind these notes are from one on the outside looking in; ultimately only you can decide what's right for your story.
Overall Impression. What can I say--I love essays. All kinds, including informative ones. You penned this offering in 2012, 13 years ago. And yet the headlines might have been lifted from today's pages. There are some who might say things in the justice system have gotten much worse. I tend to agree. But I won't rant here.
I would say that any legislator who is placed in a position of trust by voters, should be held to a higher standard, ethically and judicially. Ethical infractions should remove the person from the job; judicial convictions should send him to jail ... the first strike.
I don't have the time or the space here to list similar actions in today's public rolls. Suffice it to say, there are many from which to choose. As a student of history, I wonder if democracy has played itself out after 250 years. I have enough optimism in me to say I don't believe it has played out. We need to stand up to the 'bullies.'
I also agree--three strikes are a bit much, especially with violent crime.
Technical and Editorial Considerations. In this section I normally list those areas that relate specifically to the mechanics of your writing--punctuation, grammar, spelling, etc.
I think the word you need here is 'complicity.' ... wife because of her 'complicacy' in his crime. The situation is not really more complicated, but she is complicit, if I understand your statement as written.
My Rating. 4.5.
Thank you for sharing this offering. Please accept these comments as offered in friendship and support. They are but my humble opinion.
