Here we are. I made it from last to first entry in your drabble collection. What a ride. Thank you again for posting it to my notebook. You saved my November reviewing streak as there were days when I would have had to just give up without the ability to read something short but punchy.
This story follows a similar pattern as "Party" . A person insists that birthday parties are unwanted. Their partner insists in celebrating. This time, with a cake. The recurring theme makes me wonder: is this partially autobiographical? I have a spouse whom I have to remind every year that the public, cashiers, people in restaurants, his coworkers or mine do not need to know it's my birthday.
I love the comparison of the spouse's mind to a steel sieve. Although it has holes, it also doesn't bend. It remembers those things it wants to hold on to in an unyielding way. And lets all the things it wants to forget go right through. Perfect analogy.
