Back it Up!

Every now and then, I see it that someone posts on the newsfeed that they lost pages, drafts, and even whole books to the digital abyss.

I am not exaggerating when I tell you, those lost words make me feel as if I got sucker punched. There is nothing worse for a writer than to realize that hours, maybe days of hard work disappeared.

A true story from my life: After writing a whole chapter over the course of about eight hours, my computer glitched out. To get it back to life, I had to force reset it to a "previous" point. That previous point was sometime before those eight hours. All of my work was gone! *Cry* It took me four weeks to try and retype it. It was never the same.

Don't let that be your story.

If you are planning to write directly into an item here on Writing.Com, make sure you fill out all the fields before you start typing the main text. Enter at title, an intro line, fill out the parts below the textbox. Put the title or the first sentence into the textbox and hit the "Save & Edit" button. Now that the scaffolding has been erected, keep building your writing. Frequently hit that "Save & Edit" button. Every few words.

If you are writing online in a cloud-based system, make sure it is set up to automatically save your words every few seconds. If you are writing in Word, treat that similar to creating an item here. Give your document a title and choose where on your computer you want to save it. Once you've got that out of the way, remember to click the save button every couple of minutes. You can also set it up to save automatically.

Never trust your writing to only one place.

Once you think you are finished typing for a session, choose one or all of these options to ensure your words can be retrieved whenever you want to have them.

*Bullet* Email them to yourself - ideally to two different email addresses
*Bullet* Create an item here on Writing.Com (set it to private if you want)
*Bullet* Save it to an external hard drive
*Bullet* Burn it onto a CD (that's kinda old now)
*Bullet* Print them out on paper -- Never goes out of style and never runs out of battery

How do you keep all your precious words safe?
