Spirit Animal

In some religions or spiritual groups, people identify parts of their inner selves through comparisons to an animal. Or several animals.

The animal can be chosen by the person through their own introspective, or assigned to them by a spiritual guide within the social group. The meaning of that connection comes from the individual interpretation of the animal's traits. Those traits can be real or perceived. Sometimes, the animal gets anthropomorphized, meaning attributing human characteristics or behaviors in a sort of circular logic.

Depending on the reason for assigning or choosing a spirit animal, the reason to be for the spirit animal can be anything like enhancing a person's strengths, positive attributes, and skills; or to shield the person from weakness, challenges, or illnesses.

Similar to the idea of angels, spirit animals can come as healers or a spiritual supporter in a time of despair.

Some examples of the meaning behind certain Spirit Animals:

The wolf symbolizes strength, loyalty, freedom, and individuality.
Power, courage, and leadership are usually attributed to the lion.
Although science has found out that they aren't smarter than other birds, owls represent wisdom, intuition, and knowledge.
Bears are synonymous with courage, strength, and protection.

Although some of the typical strengths and behaviors attributed to animals have been debunked by science, it's fun to pretend that they have human aspects. In the creation of a fictional religion or spiritual practice, don't overlook the inclusion of animals.

Have you ever added an object from nature or an animal to a fictional religion?

Ask & Answer

Replies to my last Spiritual newsletter "When Religion Is Not Voluntarily ChosenOpen in new Window. that asked: What kind of methods should be employed to convert people into a religion?

Quick-Quill Author Icon wrote: I have just finished a book about a girl raised by atheists and her journey to Christ. Not by her choice, as she fights all knowledge, but Jesus has a way around all of our defenses. He wins her over through love and a painting.

Kåre เลียม Enga Author Icon wrote: Thank you for including my poem.

Most human societies have rituals and rules and whether those are labeled 'religion' is up to debate; but, in longer fiction (like a novel) they will be present regardless of the intentions of the writer.

Apondia Author Icon wrote: I really enjoyed this because you asked so many questions that are very relevant to living. I cannot even tell you how many times I have bumped into these kinds of questions, because I read so much. It seems to me a lot of people in churches come to a place where they also ask these questions. Questions can change wrong things and make people think.
