Letter from the editor

Depending on who your talk with, if you've been a member for between six months to a year, you're considered a Newbie. That is NOT a derogatory term here; it just means you're new here and still learning your way around.

Honestly, there are still features that I seldom use that require me to research how to use them. The https://www.writing.com/main/tools/action/writingml is on speed dial for me, especially when using Dropnotes or Macros. Including some of the lesser-used WritingML attributes in an article, essay or template become a small victory in my writing.

I was on my morning walk today contemplating that I hadn't submitted my newsletter. I knew there would be an automated Final Reminder from the StoryMaster in my Email when I returned home. And, I knew I should have written this newsletter over the weekend, but my wife was hosting a class reunion this past Sunday and I was pressed into service for the last-minute setup details.

Most of us have had writing deadlines that loomed large as the future fast became the present. It was that deadline that occupied my mind on that walk. Suddenly the topic of Small Victories popped into my mind along with some thoughts on the matter. Not relying on my brain to remember, I recorded a few thoughts on my phone as I walked.

I remembered back when I was new here, I was hesitant to start pumping out all the things I'd written before I joined. I had a lot of stories, essays, and even a couple poems. So, I started small. Posting that first item became a small victory. Writing my first review on my second day here was another small victory. And entering my first contest was a third. While I don't remember which contest I entered, nor do I remember how I fared. But I do remember the sense of accomplishment I felt at entering.

Most of your Newbies reading these words have posted your first Static Item. Are you ready for the next Small Victory?

All this week Sept 1 through 7, Writing.Com is celebrating its 25th Birthday with all manner of contests, raffles, auctions, with many thousands of gift points and other prizes up for grabs. Indeed, many of the festivities will go all month. Your biggest problem will be to decide in which event or activity to participate. What a time to be here on Writing.Com.

Check out "Writing.Com Party Central 2025!Open in new Window.. There are NO shortage of opportunities for your small victory. Best of luck with all your writing endeavors, no matter how small they may be.

Ask & Answer

Thanks for spending time with me today. At the bottom of every newsletter is a section entitled:

*Bullet* *Bullet* *Bullet* Don't Be Shy! Write Into This Newsletter! *Bullet* *Bullet* *Bullet*

followed by a text box. If you liked what you read (or if you didn't), please take time and drop me a line. I'd love to hear your ideas.

From Killer Quokka of County K🤦 Author Icon: *Shock2* We're not allowed to talk to strangers!

No, I haven't. But I have spoken to local writers about it. Being USian makes them wary of the site, but one day one of them might join...

*Laugh* Seriously, I hope one day they take a chance.

From : I talk to strangers about Writing.com every chance I get--in bookstores, thrift shops, etc. I have two or three friends and family members (who are becoming stranger by the day) with whom I discuss WdC. I've been trying for more than two years to convince one specific friend to join or at least visit our community. I don't pester her about it. I just mention it as often as I can. She's a good writer, but she seems to have too many other things to do with her time than spend it seriously developing her talent. It's a shame.

I find that talented people often have lots of interests. Perhaps the writing interest will rear up one day.

From HollisFrances Author Icon: I bring up Writing.com quite often to co-workers, friends, family, and yes, to strangers whenever there is an opportunity.

I think I have one of every shirt the WDC Shop offered years back. Since I wear one daily, I often get asked about the site.

From Siren Author Icon: I mention this site to everyone I know that writes in hope that they will find the guidance and encouragement that I have found here.

         Thank you!

From Jellyfish - Coming home Author Icon: Yes, I quite often mention WDC when I meet people, usually in relation to the fact that it is where my poetry is stored and they can read it if they like!

I tend to use my Blog set to Allow Everyone to get them in the door.
