About This Newsletter

What is it that you wish for? What is it that you pray for?

What is the wish that you'd most like to grant someone?

Most of us wish for something. This week's Spiritual Newsletter, then, is all about hopes and prayers.

Letter from the editor

What do you wish for? When you watch a meteor streak across the sky, or blow out the candles on a birthday cake, what, if anything, do you express of your heart’s desire?

I have often wondered what I would wish for if I were given my three wishes. It would depend on the power of whoever granted me these wishes. If I could achieve world peace and eliminate physical and mental illness, and end world hunger, obviously I would go for that. I mean, who wouldn’t? If those wishes were too difficult to achieve, though, and I would have to stick to the more personal… well, I’d still wish to heal as many people as I possibly could. And because of my insecurities I would probably wish to alter my appearance to what I would most love to look like. And okay, I’d probably go for money, not just for myself but to share, because with the way that the world is, it takes money to get anywhere. It is said that money doesn’t bring happiness, but the ability to own one’s own home, to never have to worry about bills, to have safety and security and access to the best healthcare… I’d say it goes a long way. At the very least it eliminates a whole layer of stresses.

What is a wish, though, truly? It expresses what we hope for, long for, and it’s usually for something that is difficult or even impossible to achieve. We may jokingly say that we wish for a sandwich when we can easily walk to the fridge and make one, but that’s not often the true nature of a wish. A lot of the time it’s for something that’s out of our hands, and we’re putting that longing out there in the universe knowing that it’s likely never going to happen… but just in case.

So, I wish for my loved ones to heal, because I cannot heal them myself, as much as I’d want to. I wish I had the money to make people’s lives easier, so that I could remove some of their stresses and give them the very best care in the world. I’d love to set up a couple of charities – give people financial grants to go to university for second degrees and postgraduate education, help people in difficult situations set up small businesses, and something like an animal rescue. That would be amazing. And yeah, for myself I wish to look like I look in my imagination. I know that there are ways to improve one’s appearance somewhat and sure, there’s all manner of plastic surgery these days, but not even a whole load of pain, nor money that I do not have, could possibly achieve that sense of confidence and self-like that I would love to have. So I wish, and I dream, and I ponder what life would be like if it were, well, different.

That made me wonder… is prayer a form of wishing? When I pray, I pray for the health and happiness, strength and protection of my family, my friends, my cats, and all those in need. I pray for my own health and well-being, too. For strength and guidance. For being able to be of service. And I may talk through the issues of the day, as that helps me to process whatever is going on. Whenever I finish my prayer I feel calmer and somewhat reassured. Like putting all my hopes and worries out there makes a difference. Because, again, most of these things are out of my hands. I want to make a difference in the world, and to the people around me, and I try to do my best, but I lack the power to be able to help them in many of the ways that I need. I turn to God for that.

Yet, I know that whatever I pray for may very well not come true. Our loved ones don’t always heal. Their struggles do not always end. Our own health can fail us. Sometimes, no matter how we long for guidance, we keep on feeling lost in the world. That’s no failure of our own, and doesn’t mean that we haven’t prayed well enough, or not believed strongly enough – that’s just life. It is beautiful, but can be hard, and even devastating.

So is prayer just a form of wishing, then, if there are no certainties? Perhaps. It’s still a way to express what we hope for, and long for, and often for something that is difficult or even impossible to achieve. It’s just more directed, at a source we hope will have mercy and may grant us what we wish for. It’s like expressing our hopes and desires to a friend, or a parent, except this friend or parent is infinitely powerful and could, therefore, achieve what for us humans is impossible. That is what I think helps give us that comfort when we pray – we place these big problems and worries into divine hands. It would be nice if we could have fixed it ourselves, if we had that certainty that everything was going to be okay, but in the face of insurmountable obstacles, it feels much better than complete hopelessness and helplessness.

And it’s a form of communication that’s always accessible. We don’t have to wait for a shooting star, or a birthday. I haven’t had a birthday cake in many years, actually. No matter what’s going on in life, no matter where we are or what we face, we can pray. I’ve been known to fire off a quick prayer right on the spot when I felt I needed it, and it helped.

If nothing else, prayer achieves that – it soothes the soul. At least, that’s what it does for me.

Whatever you wish for and pray for, I hope it comes true. And I wish you health and happiness, strength and protection.
