Afraid of geting hurt in a relationship

Dip or not to dip

I ease my toes in
before I take a dip,
to make sure
it's just the right temp.
If it's not just right
it will worry me.
I have to safeguard
against catastrophe.
Easy does it,
is what it takes.
Err on the side of caution
or my heart might break.
The waters may be calm now,
but time will only tell;
if this relationship will work,
or will be doomed to fail.
