Only Those Who Have Lost

Why is it that we know love
Only when we’ve lost
We can say we’ve learned from it-
Although at what cost?
When crouching in the darkness
We feel so alone
Forsaken by tenderness
Cold and desolate
Enclosed by choking shadows
Can we find no hope?
Yet always the heart discerns-
Through the dark it burns
For it truly understands-
Where it’s shining bright
Only in darkness-
Can we truly see the light
