Wrote this for a competition...didn't win, still wanted her to have a moment of spotlight

They’ll tell you to seal your lips, to hold your tongue because it’s better to be quiet than to fire the gun

The bullets pierce pride, Bruised pride comes at a price

So just breathe, or you'll be fined.

They’ll tell you to close your eyes maybe then you’ll let the disrespect slide

They’ll say he’s older, deserves your respect, they’ll say it’s just a joke, that it isn’t that serious, but there’s truth in humour even if it’s just a little

And all the small pieces are merging, and reality is being revealed in the middle.

They’ll say cover your ears as side comments fly in the air, they’ll say it will be worth it, by this they swear.

It’s the 21st century we’ve grown and evolved, so why do we still have instances where women have to block their ears

Or take it like a man

To feel less in an environment where you deserve everything you have worked for, to be proud of where you stand.

I won’t seal my lips or turn my eyes, my ears will hear, and my mind will go into overdrive

I will raise my voice, but I will not shout because the power within me refuses to bow, instead, I’ll respond with a sigh and begin disagreeing with your every word against my kind

About how this generation of women are ‘too much for the guys’ and you won’t put your ego aside, so you’ll continuously argue but, getting you to plead guilty is not what’s required

Just knowing that I stood up for myself is victory in itself

breaking silence.
