This essay skims the tip of the iceberg on the potential of mutation |
The Pros and Cons of Mutation Mutation occurs when an organism's genetic, cellular, or molecular structure is altered. Mutation could one day be the next step in our evolution. On the other hand, though, if you attempt to mutate an organism, there is a decent chance that the test subject will die if you’re not extremely careful and precise. Say you tried to mutate a Gecko to have fur or something, but you mess up the smallest, least important equation. Now the Gecko is either dead ot so repulsive that your female scientists rush to the bathroom to puke Back to the Pros. We could have a horse with the wings of a hawk! No more expensive, high-altitude flights. Just hop on a pegasus, and it’ll take you wherever you want to go without polluting the air with 7,000 gallons of diesel. And why stop there? Heck, why not give the people wings and let them do the flying? Imagine how cool it would be to be flying to, say, London from Atlanta. You could take a quick detour and stop in New York on the way! While planes fly constantly, you could stop and sightsee whenever you want. Another factor to consider: accidents. You’re flying through the air on a collision course with someone else, and just a few feet up or down, and boom! Where a car on the road would’ve killed you, mutation got you through Now we encounter our old enemy: realism. While there’s a large potential, it could also flop entirely and lead nowhere. And unless your last name is Musk, I highly doubt you have enough money for all of the technology required to alter things on the level of DNA. Also, we’d likely encounter people who think that we’re making Jurassic Park 2.0 and it’ll end in catastrophe. I doubt that those people will give us any rest until we call off the experiment. Yet another factor is the government. There are 2 main options here. One: They stop the whole experiment and ban it permanently as soon as they find out. Two: they scramble against one another for a piece of the next step in evolution. Bidding, stealing, threatening, the usual. Imagine how hard it would be to concentrate on a formula that you simply must not get wrong, but your phone is ringing every 30 seconds with a new bid on the company. If you want a summary, here you go. If not, skip to the credits. Mutation could bring the next stage of evolution to Earth, or it could kill whoever is trying it out. Not only that, but it’d be very expensive for a single go. It could also be made illegal if the government doesn’t think it’s a good idea. However, it could also solve many day-to-day problems. Credits I wrote this essay in my school's cafeteria for my amusement. I hope you think it’s good. -Written by a 7th-grade student at Abilene Christian School, Texas. |
