Family backs you up when you're in trouble. 300-word Flash |
Too Few to Mention Amber stood solemnly as the police took away her ex-husband. “You’re going to regret this!” he gritted at her. The officers tightened their hold. As they left, she turned off the mini recorder she had in her pocket. It was important to have proof of threats. “I hope this works!” Amber said as she picked up her suitcases and left. A cab waited below. She told him her destination and sat back in relief. After she boarded her flight, she sat back but Amber was still afraid. “Grandma Burton always said: Fear can only stop you if you let it, dear.” Amber knew she was right, but she still doubted herself sometimes. At the motel, Amber went to bed but didn’t sleep. The turmoil of the last few days was still roiling in her brain. Then she remembered where she was going. “Back to my roots in the Ottawa Valley. The homestead in Vandalic Hill,” she sighed. It was an idyllic three weeks. Amber finally began to relax. She was sitting on the wrap-around porch in an old rocker, when a bullet whizzed past her head. She pulled out her cellphone and punched in a pre-saved number. Her third cousin once removed was there in ten minutes. He brought backup of course and they were all armed. They gathered on the porch, taking turns to watch for ‘that no-good specimen that called himself a man.” The wives and female relatives offered to stay, which Amber took them up on. “Call the cops, Amber! We got ‘im,” she heard in the middle of the night. She did and waited for them by the door, as her female relatives sat on her ex and punched him occasionally to keep him quiet. “You can’t beat family to prevent regrets.” 300 WORDS DAILY FLASH 9/30/2025 |
