A villanelle about awakenings, inspired by The Tempest's Caliban. |
| This poem was inspired by Caliban from Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' in particular the quote- "in dreaming, The clouds methought would open and show riches Ready to drop upon me, that when I waked I cried to dream again." To live in ilusion is the happiest way, I once slumbered in the land of seeming And cried when i woke from dreams - to day. My world was a world where love held sway, I dwelled in a land of dreaming And to live in illusion is the happiest way. I learnt changes come when changes may, To send my sleeping head a-reeling And make me cry when I woke from dreams - to day. I opened my eyes to see love wouldn't stay Nor would that adored illusive feeling And an illusive life is the happiest way. The day I awoke in was desperate, grey, And the hours devoid of meaning So I cried when i Woke from dreams today. Now i long for dreams, i wait, i pray. And hope with them will come some healing. To live in illusion is the happiest way, So I dream and hope i won't wake today. |
