This is the inside of the Curia Hostilia, the Republican Roman Senate Chamber in modern Rome. It is a tourist site now. It is where the Roman Senate met from the forming of the Republic until the time of Julius Caesar. In this building, the Senate decided whether or not Rome would become an empire. In this building, Fabius Maximus devised strategy to resist Hannibal. It was replaced by the later Curia Julia. At the beginning of the Dark Ages it was a Christian Church. The medieval Church wanted to signify that, even if they could, they would never do the Roman Empire again.
