The Help  I recommend both the book and the movie. I suggest reading the book before watching the movie but both are great.NOTE: This review is a work in progress. For now, most of my words are hidden. | |||||||||
This type of Book is good for... | |||||||||
The Help is good for getting us thinking about the inequalities in life and about the history of slavery in our country. These women were not slaves, they were servants but it was at a time when the mentality of many of white people (especially in the South) caused them to view the Negro race as being inferior to the white race. They look down on them -- instead of just feeling different from them, they felt superior to them. Those of us who didn't live in with these circumstances can get a sense of what life was like in those days. As I read Kathryn Stockett's words, I can easily identify with the maids as they share their thoughts. The author did an excellent job presenting the story to us as she used her imagination to help us get a glimpse of what it was like to be a servant in those households in that time or to be a black person in that community at that time. | |||||||||
