This is sort of a modern day, grounded in reality vampire story? It is an attempt at literary YA but falls short of that goal. | ||

I especially liked... | ||
The "ghetto" setting was pretty well done. Sadly, most of the book doesn't take place there. I enjoyed a few of the side characters until it became clear that they were "one-trick ponies". I also liked that each chapter began with a snippet from some classic dark or gothic literature. That could serve as a nice introduction for teenagers. | ||
I didn't like... | ||
The characters didn't quite elevate beyond caricatures. The main character didn't seem to experience a whole lot of growth or development, which certainly isn't ideal for a book attempting to be literary. The descriptions were pretty clunky at times too. Unneccessary chains of modifiers all over the place, describing elements that didn't need any description. Some of the metaphors were a bit heavy handed, and one of the major climactic events occurred in a dreamy/magic sort of way that was just unsatisfying. Some revelations were made in hints rather than explicit descriptions, which will make readers work for answers to some degree. | ||
