Summary of this Book...
"Patterson’s greatest crime-solving team since the Women’s Murder Club is the Bird Sisters. Rhonda and Barbara “Baby” Bird are half-sisters—and full partners in their Los Angeles detective agency. They agree on nothing. Rhonda, a former attorney, takes a by-the-book approach to solving crimes, while teenage Baby relies on her street smarts. But when they take a controversial case of a loner whose popular wife has gone missing, they’re accused of being PIs who can’t tell a client from a killer. The Bird sisters share a late father, but not much else… except their willingness to fight. Fight the system. Fight for the underdog. Fight for the truth. If they can stop fighting each other long enough to work together." Quoted material is from the book's Amazon sales page. Most of my review is in the "further comments" section, near the bottom.

This thriller story has some interesting twists and turns, and definitely raised my eyebrows at several points. I literally said to the person driving me somewhere, when we got to our destination and I had to put the book down, that "this might be the weirdest book I've ever read." I meant it in a mostly good way. I would never have thought of some of these plot twists. I don't think things needed to get quite so violent so often, but I guess that's what sells because this book is doing fantastic on the best seller lists. I am not yet sure what ratings I'll give it, but given that I do want to read the next book, and would likely read a third, if one is published, I'll probably lean in the higher direction once I get to that part of this review. I loved both sisters and really wanted them to succeed. There was one point on one of Baby's story lines that didn't much involve her older sister that I just didn't see a way out of. That's pretty rare for me. I pride myself on creative solutions and there always being a way... anyway, so her having found a resolution for that really made me love her. And I think her sister's means of taking care of her late-night intruder made me feel a bit in awe of her. So while I didn't feel like I was the heroine, and have no desire to lead a life like either of theirs, I did greatly admire both of them. Their characters were the best part of the book for me. Additional thoughts: My library had this listed in a section "first in series" so I thought this was the first book in the series (it's not - it's the second), and I think it would have been better to have actually read the first one first. I didn't realize, until I'd finished the whole book and flipped through the after book material that it was actually the second one. So, for the first few chapters, some things felt out of order to me, but I don't think they would have, had I read the first book first. But I don't know for sure, because I haven't read it yet. Anyway, if I ignore that, it was an interesting and fast-paced read. It definitely had its exciting moments. I do want to read the first book. However, I really wish that Baby had been at least 18, because having a 16 year old doing all that she did with a lawyer for a guardian really kept taking me out of the story, thinking things like, a lawyer would know she's risking losing guardianship of her sister and having her put in foster care by allowing this or that. Product details from the book's Amazon sales page as of the evening of April 28, 2025: " Print length : 362 pages Best Sellers Rank: #396 in Kindle Store (See Top 100 in Kindle Store) #3 in Private Investigator Mysteries (Kindle Store) #4 in Private Investigator Mysteries (Books) #10 in Women Sleuths (Kindle Store)" I think the best seller ranks are amazing. I imagine that it was and / or will be #1 in some categories too. Right now (as I'm writing this), it has over 1,500 reviews averaging 4.5 stars on Amazon, and 585 reviews averaging 4.3 stars on Goodreads. If you can suspend belief (a lot of it is unbelievable), and want a fast-paced thriller featuring two very different, yet amazing sister heroines, I think this is a winner.
