A place for me to write to those who enjoy my stories...
|A blog to discuss my favorite stories and/or ideas. Please feel free to comment!|
|As my ability write flowery prose improves, I'm receiving more feedback that I might want to dial it back a notch. As I read the stories that they are commenting on, I can't help but agree. Especially when I'm writing fantasy stories or science fiction, where the subject matter itself is already kinda ostentatious.
Trying to do too much fancy writing can make a story difficult to read--particularly a longer work.
One recent reviewer put it best, I think.
"Good writing, like good breeding, should not draw attention to itself."

|Oops! It was just brought to my attention that a villanelle is not what I did:
aba aba aba aba aba abaa
It's supposed to be:
A1 b A2 / a b A1 / a b A2 / a b A1 / a b A2 / a b A1 A2
Time to rework my poem.
Crap! Some lousy poet I am!
|Feels great when you just know you nailed a character moment. Especially for a character that's so different than yourself and sometimes difficult to relate to.
"Cowed, she nodded, eyes on the ground. I could have sworn I detected the glimmer of a tear before she cast her gaze downward. I almost made her show me. But I didn’t. ‘Cause I’m fucking benevolent like that."
THE BIRDS 2: BIRDIER
Ever seen Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds?
Ever wondered about that ambiguous, unsatisfying ending?
I encourage you to check out my unauthorized sequel, More Birds, Fewer People before it is blocked from future printings by Universal Pictures for blatant copyright violations.
Finally, 57 years after the movie hit theaters worldwide, you will learn the motivation behind their heinous, unprovoked attacks. You will look behind the leaves of the secret terrorist training trees where the birds hone their martial pecking arts. You will see that the so-called love birds are anything but.
Read about elite bird special forces, known as the Raven Wings, rending delicate, innocent human flesh as they dive-bomb cities all over the world in a massive, catastrophic campaign of shock and awe to rid the world of its human enemies in one fell swoop.
God help us all.
|Today, I had someone ask me which I felt were the best of my stories. Though I wouldn't say that I'm happy with anything I've written yet, I have given it some thought and decided that these were my favorites of what I've written thus far:
|I tied with Beholden for the win on this week's "Invalid Item" contest! If you haven't read Beholden 's work, I highly recommend a look-see. He's an incredibly talented and versatile writer, and I love reading his contest entries. I've begun to dip into his portfolio whenever I have a sec to read. :)
|It's the strangest thing.
Before I begin a story, I usually think about what I'm going to write. I design a story in thought--the beginning at least, even if I don't always know how it will end.
With poetry, though, I have no idea what is going to happen. I sit down, start typing, and the poem comes out of me. I don't know what it will be about. I don't know where it's going. I don't know how it will start. I don't know how it will finish. It just happens. It's an impromptu dance with language. It's the darndest thing.
