A Journal to impart knowledge and facts
July 22, 2015

I'm going to start today to record on a daily basis whatever happens to strike my fancy. So, it is a very cool breezy day. I just posted 5 short book reviews to The Monthly Reading Challenge. I'm suppose to put away some winter wood today from the woodpile outside but I'm playing hookey from work to write so starting this blog will get done.

I'm having a daily fight with a flock of English Sparrows that are trying to take over my barn. They are making a terrible mess so they have to go. I have destroyed several nests so far they don't leave but they get out of the barn when I am around. I'm just starting the fight so I guess I don't know how far I have to go to discourage them.

I'm trying not to spread myself to thin on WDC because I find so many things that are interesting here and I am trying to work on a new story. I really enjoy sitting at my desk with a cup of tea and reading blogs on WDC.

What is the Hardest Part of Your Job? Tell us how you deal with it.

Quote :Mindfulness can open the door, but only character strengths can keep it open
Ryan M. Niemiec, Mindfulness and Character Strengths {https://www.wow4u.com/quote-of-the-day/}

Right now. My job is being retired. It's a lot like being a kid again. No one says I have to do anything each day, so I try to use my time wisely which, is some days well spent other days a joke. I crocheted a Stetson hat this summer and it is so cool. Now, working on a winter coat for my whippet. I read, do housework, cook and bake, play games on my kindle. mow lawn sometimes. I think of spending an eternity of days finding activities and think it would be fun to live this way for years yet. The hardest thing about being elderly is convincing younger people the elderly life is worthwhile. Elderly people can think and work and live.

I look back on my time when I was training horses and riding. One time when I was teaching a girl guitar. Some students have the idea that they can take in the information without doing the practicing that sports and music demands. I had students, that had a regular excuse, when they did not spend time on the specific practice for the week. I felt like I was just taking their money. I often asked such students why they kept coming to lessons if they were not going to work on the problems they were experiencing.

Often such students, particularly the horse back riders, had unruly mounts. The horses knew the rider was out of sorts and so refused good manners. The riders could not comprehend that the horse would be mannerly only if the rider cared to put into practice the proper equestrian model, that would give both the equine and rider comfort and pleasure during the ride.

Learning any thing is a hands on experience. New knowledge has to become a part of your life. So, when the new changes show up in any given subject as they will down through the years. You can see the rightness of a new system in an old subject .You can absorb the new material and continue on with your life. Use cooking as an example. Cook stoves fueled with wood or coal moved to cookstoves with electricity, to Microwave ovens, now to air fryers. If you are going to stay on the earth 50 or more years you will see a change in something you know or use.

Happy Trails.

Where do you see yourself five years from now? Be realistic, write about your writing plans, or other plans you may have.

Manx Cat from Japan

Quote:“The future is never just one choice. It's a thousand. And they never stop. You will choose your future every day of your life. And should you wake up one day to find that you regret the choice you made the day before, then make a new one. Don't worry about whether you might be wrong someday. Worry about whether you're right now. Tomorrow can wait.”
Cora Carmack, All Played Out --https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/future-plan

Five Years? That is such a short amount of time. If nothing large changes in my life I will still be here muddling along. We are slowly making changes that will make life easier.

Last years corn stove experiment worked so well we are installing a smaller one on the main floor. The corn stove we installed in the basement resulted in a reduction in the amount of electricity we used in preceding years. We had less work load by eliminating wood heat. We continued to heat the living room on the main floor with a radiant heater.

I did consider tearing down the whole house and building a tiny house in its place which I doubt would ever happen. *Laugh* That is my brain which doesn't age talking.

In 5 years, my school loans will be paid extra dollars in the budget will be nice.

I do wonder about the aging process. In 5 years I will be 81. I talked to an 81 year old women this summer. Her husband passed away last spring. She is maintaining her life style in the home where she raised her family and is presently doing well.

I'm going to miss summer this year. We have some insulating to do and the new corn stove to install. My new companion dog which I got last Christmas has progressed in his obedience training. I take as many daily walks with the two dogs as I can. Sometimes lately, if the heat is simmering I skip walks. Really, living is just a daily adventure. If there are going to be any major changes in the next 5 years I can't see them right now. I'm moving into the next season one day at a time.

Well, let's get this official month started with a different sort of prompt... What room in your home do you use the most? The least?

owl for signature use

Quote: “Gamache knew people were like homes. Some were cheerful and bright, some gloomy. Some could look good on the outside but feel wretched on the interior. And some of the least attractive homes, from the outside, were kindly and warm inside." by Louise Penny, from her novel The Cruelest Month--https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/rooms

Rooms

I can't say for sure. We have a lot of rooms. We use some of them more in one season or another. The living room has the computers, and TV. so I spend a lot of time there. I do the cooking and cleanup so I spend a lot of time in the kitchen. The laundry room gets it share of time spent. My guitar is in my bedroom, that is also where I may play a lot of music ,I have a cd player there, or read as well as sleep.

It really depends on the activities for the day. Am I sitting round watching TV. or baking, online shopping, or doing laundry. I read every where. When I'm working on something with the dogs I may spend a lot of time up and down the hall ways. Probably, if I would count hours the living room would be the most on many days. The balcony is set up as a sitting room and I keep the cat boxes there it would probably be the least.

Here we are, half way through the month already! This is what I hope is a different sort of prompt. Almost everyone has them, so tell us about your favorite restaurant. In the past, mine have been Pappadeaux, Abuelos, Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, and others. Do you have any?

Wow! July 15 is gone. June went this way too. Heavy storms every day. Thunder and Lightning. Even today it is overcast and I can hear electricity humming in the air.

We haven't been out to eat since March 2020. We do pick up Pizza, or subs. There is good chicken takeout at a gas station in a nearby town.

My favorite use to be Perkin's. They had a lot of menu choices. Also, no matter which direction you went to shop North, East, South, or West there was a Perkins nearby. One year we bought a calendar from them. Each day there was a different coupon for a special selection. And, they had a bakery attached so you could buy a pie and take it home for dessert. There cookies with a smile on them were well known around here. I don't even know if any of the restaurants exist anymore since Covid. Most of the time now it is a fast food place with take out. There are a lot of meals in the grocery stores. We bring some of them home when we grocery shop.

Heavy rain starting. I may lose the WIFI See Ya

There have been many influencers on you as you have aged. Tonight, write about the person who has had the greatest impact on your life.

owl for signature use *BookStack3*

Even though there have been lots of people around me, who told me important things; I think the main influence has been libraries and the books that I've been able to read over time. At each stage in your time line you need people who understand, whatever has gone on during different historical moments. Because, meaningful people in my life have been hit and miss, while books have been actually more accessible than people on a regular basis, when you look at the way I grew up.

History written by journalists can often shine light on a truthful non-biased account of a historical event, that has influenced or is presently influencing ideas worldwide. It also shows, how a news media account can be biased, if it does not have all the facts of any specific occurrence.

People in governments write books about their own personal experiences within the realm of their job. Personal experiences help, when it comes to how others form opinions. If you know what was going on in a certain historical time you can understand better, what caused a certain age group to think the way it does.

I took time after college to read more text books about the science of sociology. Just knowing how it was formed made an impact on how I seek information.

As an example I will tell you about my Grandmother. My dad's mother was very outspoken about Catholics as a whole. She always seemed to be against anything or anyone whose history held the word Catholic.

This was brought to my attention after I became an adult by family members who spoke about my Grandmother in an unkind way, because of her outspokenness about Catholic people. (people specifically aligned with the Catholic Church as members of that organizational way of faith.)

If you look at my Grandmothers timeline you will find her formative years were during a time when the Catholic Church was having an impact within the USA by written articles attempting to influence the protestant church (articles were written by Males influenced by their faith inside Catholic Church) in the USA about different church doctrines. These articles were debated in local newspapers and distributed pamphlets, with many taking sides Catholic vs Protestant. The Catholic position at that time considered how difficult it was to raise large families and find jobs for males to support large families. There was an effort to influence lawmakers in the USA legislature and also to influence the Supreme Court to a way of thinking that would support the Catholic Church and its doctrinal stands in a larger way.

My Grandmother's family was educated at the time. Grandmother attended college and was a teacher for a time. Her family was strongly protestant, and so her attitudes were formed from that social group.

Nevertheless, I spent a lot of time as a child with my Grandmother and knew her as someone who cared about the welfare of people regardless of their church affiliation. She was willing to right wrongs when it was her ability to involve herself. And was a strong advocate for truthfulness.

Unless you look into the truth of, whatever vs whatever, You may form opinions about what group to follow only to find out there is something not so nice driving the scenario. This has been apparent in many news worthy events in the last 50 years or more.

I noticed, that in the recent coverage of the attack on the Capitol building. Many of those in the area after the attack was brought under control; were not aware of the planned violence. Demonstrators interviewed later, told reporters they were on the scene and surprised, when the violence broke out, as they were there only to demonstrate, not to break into the capitol building.

Forming opinions in life means knowing the many sides of a story. You won't necessarily find it in your neighbors attitudes.

We've all done it. At least I have. Write about a time you were inappropriately dressed for the occasion.

owl for signature use *MugP*

We have a group of people around here who take scripture in a literal sense. They think all women should wear dresses and long hair 24/7.

When the heat hit I cut my tresses totally short. Much cooler. I smiled a *Devilish* smile while doing it.

This is a rural area and most women who work on a property of any size wear jeans or slacks.

The last place I went where a dress would have been appropriate was one of my grandson's graduations. It was outside on a football field. Someone recommended I wear slacks so I changed to slacks. After I got there I figured I could have stayed in the dress but, I was not out of place because probably 75 percent or more of women of all ages were wearing slacks. The other per cent opted form long flowing dresses of one type or another.

I have a really long flowing green dress I bought one year at Walmart. I wore it one Sunday around the house all day, a couple weeks ago. It was only the second time I ever wore it anywhere.

20 years ago, maybe more, I bought a pattern for long flowing pants. Made of different types of soft material. They are all wearing out now. I was thinking of looking for the pattern and buying some material for more of them. In the summer they are cooler than jeans. No real male would be caught wearing them for any reason. They would be inappropriate for field work but, I can drive a tractor while wearing them, or mow the lawn, or walk the dogs.

I have not been to a wedding or anywhere formal wear is involved for years. If I lived in the city or a small town I would still wear slacks around the house. I also own and wear jeans.

Male or Female I can tell the difference no matter what the dress. Where is your common sense? Wear what makes you comfortable and keeps you satisfied you are not out of place for shopping or throwing hay, or attending the church picnic.

I have to go now. The dark clouds are gathering for another storm. If it rains too hard we will lose our WIFI signal until it stops.

What are you particularly passionate about within your career/job? If you are retired, what were you passionate about in your job when you retired? {{/b}c:grape}from which you retired?

With horse training it is get the horse to rely on and trust the rider. In teaching riding and handling it is kindness to the horse and safety rules for the handler and rider. In dog grooming it is grooming without pain. A lot of deep grooming is removing mats. For specific breeds of dogs it is getting the pattern right. (Listen to the owners they know what problems they may be encountering.0

In the chair factory it was learning and using the machinery properly: mostly I ran dowlers.

In the donut shop it was cleanliness, proper counting, don't keep the customers waiting.

Raising sheep and dairy goats and milking goats for the product to use in our home it was learning everything biological about ruminants. Keep them healthy and keep to a schedule.

SEE YA!

We've all had a mentor or two in our lives. Tonight, write about the first person that ever believed in you.

Owl with signature*Mask*

My mentor list would be long. The firs person would be my mother. She looked out for me until my 6th birthday. After that it was my brother, dad, uncles, aunts, a grandmother, and teachers who gave me good advice along the way. A little here a little there helped me move along in life.

What I know is the right comment at the right time gives understanding. Understanding combined with experience helps people succeed.

We've all had them, good and bad. Write about the best boss you’ve ever had.

signature dancing owl *DragonflyV*

I was hired at the donut shop where I was employed in 1993. The woman who hired me was going to school to learn business management. She was understanding and efficient in her job. When she graduated from school she left the job for another position. The shop went down hill from that time on. The new manager was very good at keeping the shop running, but not able to find good help and deal with the politics within the system. Good management seems to really matter.
