Not much ado about anything but my mind's eye :-)
It was a dark and stormy night, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring but the apple mouse.

I joined Common Cause as an Action Team member. I said yes. I am a Veteran and an experienced online teacher, and those are the skills I have offered. I believe it is time. Onward!

I saw death in line yesterday. Shifty. Challenging to be sure of features. Thin. Fade in, fade out, but not ever invisible. Walking and moving like the rest of us, but never speaking. Always changing positions, and smoothly moving from place to place, neither quickly nor slowly. Muted blacks and grays for clothing, with a flopping hood over his head and sometimes his face. For sure, a "he." No groceries actually were chosen or purchased. He breached social distancing guidelines next to me once, so perhaps I shall die soon, although he remained distant from me most of the time. I have promised my family to improve at staying safe.

April 1968. TET offensive underway in Vietnam. I am a college senior, but they did not care. Drafted me, with 24 hours notice, into USArmy. Exam completed in 4 hours, on a bus to Ft. Lewis, Washington within hours, not allowed to see my wife before the bus pulled out. Arrived middle of the night. Head shaved, showered down, in fatigues for a no-sleep breakfast of scrambled eggs scraped into a pan from a large and frozen block of pre-cooked eggs. Barracked with unknown others, hustled into the military basic training routine, with Drill Sergeants who were on rotation from having fought in the Vietnam jungle, and who brooked no bull s***.
The training was just what I needed to become a good soldier, and a good soldier I was. There is more to the story, but some other time. Thanks for listening.

It was a gentle sunny morning, before the intensity of the mid-day heat began to wilt us all. A drought year, again.
