Any thoughts on...

KDP vs KDP Select?

Asking because I'm self-publishing a children's picture book on Amazon and I'm just not sure if I should go with Select or not. Any thoughts on this are greatly appreciated. *Smile*

Thanks in advance!
Jeff
KDP is just the general non-exclusive Amazon self-publishing program. It's what you use if you want to sell your books on Amazon, but also want to make them available elsewhere.

KDP Select, at its most basic, is the exclusive Amazon program where you get paid a fraction of a cent for page reads (from those who pay for a Kindle Unlimited account) in exchange for making the book exclusively available on Amazon and not other retailers (Apple Books, Nook, Kobo, etc.).

There are a lot of factors to consider, and the "wide vs. exclusive to Amazon" strategies are a hot-debated topic in self-publishing. I'd be happy to discuss them in depth if you'd like, but it mostly boils down to this:

- KDP Select gives you more visibility on Amazon and more financial opportunity from page reads.
- KDP is the way to go if you want to widely release your books to find audiences on multiple platforms.

Since you're publishing a children's picture book, I don't think you're going to get a lot of extra money from page reads since the book is so comparatively short. So it really comes down to how you want to release. Do you want to just put it up on Amazon and see how it goes? Or do you want to put it up on every store and see how it goes?

The good news is that KDP Select is only three months at a time, so you can enroll at any time and, if you're not happy with it, after three months you can pull your books from KDP Select and release them elsewhere at that point.

Hope this helps!
Thank you, Jayne, for asking your friend! I'm interested in what she has to say. *Smile*

Also, thank you, Annette, for tagging Mara. I'm very curious to what she thinks, since she has published on Amazon.

Jeff, I appreciate all the great info! I didn't realize I could change my mind after three months. I might go for the Select, in that case, as I'm busy in the summers anyway, so that might work out well. *Smile*

Thanks, everyone, for taking the time to comment! *Smile*
Okay, now I'm thinking I won't go with Select. *Whistle* Actually, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. At least I understand it more now. *Smile* That's a huge plus.
I've added a new entry to my book, "Poetree:

I've added a new entry to my book, "A Little Bit of Everything:

In this weather, it is important to stay hydrated. Among other things, dehydration causes kidney stones and kidney failure.
Another great reason to drink more water! Thanks for sharing, Chris Breva AKA Marvin Schrebe. *Smile*
