Here are a couple of "newbie" friendly contests you might be interested in. The poetry contest is running this month. The short story contest will run in May.
. I highlight 3-ish contests each month. You enter one and post proof you entered. Do that 12 months in a row and there's great rewards. And sometimes, there's even rewards before you're done.
When you find a person you like and want to follow, double click their gray heart until it becomes gold/yellow to become a fan of theirs. When you find an activity you want to keep up with, do the same thing, but you have to go to the activity page and double click the heart in the upper right corner.
Clicking the heart on the link (as above) or under the title on the item's forum page only fans the owner, not the item. Of course, feel free to fan the owner, if you want, but just saying, it's not the same. Items you've clicked the heart of will appear on your Favorites list so you can find them more easily.
