This works both as a complete story and could be part of a novel. It sets the right tone and atmosphere for a horror story, a young woman held hostage in a dark, dirty basement and it makes the reader wonder, will she get out, will be able to defend herself against this madman with just her trusty hammer? It makes me want to read more to find out what happens to her, which makes it a good story.
