Well! Very interesting essay about the meaning of life and what constitutes a life well lived. Unfortunately in this day and age, we get so busy with the expediencies of life that we don't often stop to ponder much beyond making a living, feeding a family, doing our daily tasks, and watching TV. I agree that there are people who choose to live as derelicts although that's hard for me to fathom. If you read "The Glass Castle", you will see an account of a person who chooses to be homeless. It was the first time I ever heard of such a thing. Most of the homeless people we see now are there because of drugs. Period! There are all kinds of support systems in place to help those less fortunate than ourselves if they follow a few behavior norms. I wasn't aware that the U.S. had such programs as outlined in the first part of this essay. Our attitudes have changed a lot toward the disabled, and this is a good thing. I like that it didn't preach conclusions, but presented facts so I could draw my own.
